Essentials of Corporate Performance Measurement
Published in Digital by John Wiley & Sons, Inc. ()
Average review score:

Book provides excellent discussion of measures and ROIThis is the second Essentials book I purchased in the series and I can't rave enough about them. In my management position in one of the top financial industries, I need to understand what is going on but I don't need the technical details so many other books get into. These book provide great coverage on important topics -- they really help be to understand. I heard about and had a slight grasp on the use of ROI and other measures from my work, but I didn't really understand it until I read this book. A must have for any professional--I'm recommending it to my colleagues too!

Estimating Device Reliability: Assessment of Credibility (Kluwer International Series in Engineering and Computer Science, 206)
Published in Hardcover by Kluwer Academic Publishers (March, 1993)
Average review score:

The best reliability book out there for my moneyMost reliability books end up being very dry, and filled with equations with little explanation of WHY each of the distributions are used, or how you can go wrong. This book is very different. The author brings up concrete examples of mistakes which are routinely made by inexperienced engineers. He explains clearly which distribution is reasonable for various types of applications. The book is interesting to read, for the most part. (Okay, it still has a few boring chapters at the start, which I recommend skipping.) He even uses the example of human mortality to clearly illustrate concepts of "failure rate" in a way which gets rid of confusion. Finally, the book concludes with a case study for qualifying a high-reliability laser for use in undersea fiber optic communication links. While Franklin Nash's short course is the best I've ever taken, short of seeing him in person, reading this book is the next best thing. (In fact, I'd recommend the book even if you were going to attend the short course.) I've read it several different times in my job as a reliability engineer, and have obtained an understanding of the field that I haven't seen explained as well anywhere else. I give this book my strongest recommendation.

F.P.A.: The Life and Times of Franklin Pierce Adams
Published in Hardcover by Olympic Marketing Corporation (September, 1986)
Average review score:

ExcellentThis is an extremely well-written book on a sadly neglected figure in American culture. The most popular newspaper columnist of his time, Adams made "Tinker to Evers to Chance" a national catchphrase and was mentor to George S. Kaufman, James Thurber and other distinguished humorists. I thought the research was particularly thorough--especially regarding the ancestry of Adams' second wife. And someone must have done a lot of work in musty libraries looking up all F.P.A.'s articles for now-forgotten magazines! I hope he got paid well. I would also single out the index for special praise.

Fabulous French Fruit Cuisine: Gourmet French Fruit Recipes from a Master Chef
Published in Paperback by Athene Pub Co Ltd (October, 1988)
Average review score:

Tasty idiosyncraciesThis is my all-time favorite cookbook, treasured because it features ingredient combinations unheard-of elsewhere -- and they taste great.
It's worth the buy just to browse the titles of the recipes - Rose wine and white plum jelly, rhubarb snow with raspberries, fresh figs with toasted goat cheese, spiced banana croissants.
The book features soups, appetizers, salads, entrees, desserts, a "garland" of mouth-watering sauces, and fruit beverages.
The author is apparently Anglo-French. He's opinionated, idiosyncratic, and given to vegetarian-izing and lightening traditional recipes. But what tasty idiosyncracies!
Think you won't love the Pumpkin and Potato Bake with green grapes and Brie? Wait till you try it. My guests always beg for more (I never tell them what's in it till they've sample it.)
This is not Joy of Cooking. The recipes are given in Imperial and American versions, and sometimes a bit gets lost in the translation. What's lamb's lettuce? What's castor sugar?
But if you're a creative cook in search of inspiration, there's plenty to find in this rare gem of a cookbook.

False Alarm (The Hardy Boys Casefiles, No 84)
Published in Paperback by Simon Pulse (February, 1994)
Average review score:

Hi dadI like the way that Fenton Hardy and one of his old enemies wasbrought into this book. Their was an atmosphere to this book that sent chills up my spine as I read it. Plus it was last winter when I read it. I think someone needs to get some ghost writers together and write a series about the exploits of Fenton Hardy before Frank and Joe came along. This would be a real treat.

A Family Matter
Published in Paperback by Pocket Books (July, 1982)
Average review score:

were the rosenburg's innocent?in the 1950's, a book was published entitled "From Major Jordan's Diary". An officer in charge of the lend lease program to Russia, Major Jordan declared that he had evidence that FDR had provided the materials from the Manhattan Project for making a bomb to the Soviet union via Lend Lease shipments. For decades Major Jordan was ridiculed. Also during the 1950's, the Rosenburgs were executed for giving away these same atomic secrets to the Soviets. For decades this has been held to be true. However, in the early 1980's one James Roosevelt, the son of FDR, wrote a book about the events surrounding the Yalta Conference involving his father, Churchill and Stalin. In the events of this book, which James was a witness to, he writes an engrossing account of the "family matter" between FDR and Stalin in the back channels of this historic conference, which not only support the claims of Major Jordan, but also exonerates the Rosenburgs and devestatingly rewrites the history of the entire Cold War.

Fat Tire Fun
Published in Paperback by Central Coast Books (01 August, 1998)
Average review score:

SLO Mountain Biking BibleAll I can say is that I've ridden with the authors and these guys know SLO mountain biking. In staying true to the sport, the authors hold yearly Hammerfests, where we spend an entire Memorial Day Weekend "hammering" out the trails listed in this book, and then some.
Although there isn't an Illegal Trails version of this book for obvious reasons, the legal ones clearly illustrated in this book are enough for most beginner and serious bikers alike.
Fat Tire Fun features an easy-to-use format. Trails are clearly labeled and each ride is prefaced by a brief synopsis featuring a ride difficulty scale (1 to 5), ride elevation profile, and--most important of all--the PO (Poison Oak) factor.
If you are going to ride SLO--or are a SLO county biking veteran--then this book is a must. I know for a fact that the authors have ridden every single trail multiple times, and they can ocassionally be found at the Pozos saloon with a gallon of Pozo Martini within arm's reach.
